How is a portal (Our Matters) different from a website?

Many associations have what is referred to as an intranet, which allows all members to operate and communicate in a shared, networked location; however an intranet has to be accessed within a association's computer network. This keeps people outside of your association out of your private conversations and happenings that only members need to know about. A portal works the same way, except it allows members to have access outside of your association's computer network because it is hosted externally. As long as there is an internet connection, members have access to the portal. At the same time, a portal still keeps your information safe so that only your members will have access to it.
